South Sudan – Conflict

• There are more than one million internally displaced people (1 040 706) since the violence erupted on 15 December 2013, including over 95 000 at the UN bases. 364 710 South Sudanese have sought refuge in the neighbouring countries.

• About 70 000 new displacements recorded since 9 May, when, for a second time, a cessation of hostilities was agreed upon.

• The number of cholera cases continued to rise in Juba with 892 cumulative suspected cases and 27 deaths. Additional suspected cases have been reported in other parts of the country, mainly in Twic East county (Jonglei) and Kaka (Upper Nile). The mortality rate has exceeded the emergency threshold.

• Food shortages persist in Maban county (Upper Nile), forcing thousands of Sudanese refugees to return to war-torn Blue Nile state in Sudan, according to UNHCR. (ECHO, OCHA, WHO, UNICEF, UNHCR)

Central African Republic – Conflict

• Following the attack on Notre Dame de Fatima church in Bangui on 28 May, new displacements estimated at least at 23 000 people have been noticed into different camps in Bangui. Humanitarian organizations are proceeding with need assessments in these sites.

• 15 people have been reported killed and 31 injured in the Fatima church attack.

• Even if tensions had decreased in Bangui since Sunday 1 June, the situation remains very unstable. (ECHO)

Guatemala – Severe Weather

• A low pressure system brought heavy rainfall over Guatemala in the past few days. WMO reports 210mm of rain in 24h in the Pacific coast city of San Jose on 2 June. As of the same day, AP reports five deaths due to a landslide triggered by heavy rain in the province of Huehuetenango, western Guatemala.

• On 2 June, the low pressure system formed a Tropical Depression off the Pacific coasts of Guatemala and southern Mexico. As of 3 June, 9.00 UTC, the Tropical Depression had max. sustained winds of 56km/h and its approximate centre was located 220km west of Chiapas, Mexico. It was forecast to intensify into a Tropical Storm within the following hours and move towards land, approaching it on 4 June.

• Over the coming hours, rain is expected to continue affecting Guatemala, as well as Oaxaca and Chiapas in southern Mexico. (GDACS, JTWC, WMO, AP, CONAGUA, CONRED)

Iran – Severe Weather

• Strong winds triggered sandstorms in the area of Iran's capital, Tehran, on 2 June, causing casualties and damage, including power cuts and air traffic disruptions.

• As of 3 June, Iranian media quoting Disaster Management authorities report five deaths related to the sandstorm, as well as over 45 injuries, all in Tehran. (BBC, National Media, Local Media)
